Can You Change Your UK Driving Licence Number Online?

Statutory Guide • Verified against DVLA Driver Register Guidelines

If you have ever checked your photocard licence and wondered whether you can request a new driving licence number online, the short answer is no. Unlike passwords, debit cards, or phone numbers, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) does not permit UK motorists to change their licence number for convenience or personal preference.

The Secret DVLA Driving Licence Algorithm

Your 16-character driving licence number is not a randomly generated serial number. It is a deterministic mathematical formula encoded directly from your personal details:

  • Characters 1–5: The first five letters of your legal surname (padded with the number 9 if your name has fewer than five letters, e.g. JONES or NG999).
  • Character 6: The decade digit of your year of birth (for example, 8 if you were born in 1984).
  • Characters 7–8: The month of your birth. Crucially, for females, 50 is added to the month number (e.g. July becomes 57, December becomes 62).
  • Characters 9–10: The day of the month you were born (0131).
  • Character 11: The individual year digit of your birth year (e.g. 4 for 1984).
  • Characters 12–13: The first two initials of your forenames (padded with 9 if you have no middle name).
  • Character 14: A computer security check digit.
  • Characters 15–16: Security tie-breaker digits.
  • Separate 2 Digits: The Issue Number (e.g. 01, 02), which increments every time a new card is manufactured.

The Only 3 Times Your Licence Number Will Change

Under UK statutory regulations, your driving licence number will only change in three specific circumstances:

  1. 1. Legal Change of Surname: When you marry, form a civil partnership, or execute a deed poll, your new legal surname recalculates characters 1 through 5.
  2. 2. Legal Change of Gender Marker: If you update your gender record with the DVLA, characters 7 and 8 are recalculated (adding or subtracting 50).
  3. 3. Severe Proven Identity Fraud: If your licence details have been heavily compromised in criminal proceedings, the DVLA Fraud Operations Team in Swansea can manually assign a replacement file upon production of a Police Crime Reference Number.
